There have been some reports about issues with the Updater not updating anymore. Please try the latest beta version and switch to another IP Check provider instead of the previous default dnsomatic.com. For some reason they are rate-limiting the number of requests to their service. The new IP Check provider selection allows you to choose another provider in such cases. You can test the functionality with the new "Test" panel.
If you want to add a custom provider to the unstable testing version, store a JSON file like the following under %PROGRAMDATA%\Marcs Updater\ServiceProviders\dyndns.json
:
{ "name": "DynDNS.org (Test)", "endpoint": "https://members.dyndns.org/nic/update", "method": "GET", "queryString": "hostname={HOSTNAME}&myip={MYIP}", "dataPayload": "", "defaults": { "username": "test", "password": "test", "hostname": "test1.customtest.dyndns.org" } }
Supported query and payload tags are {USERNAME}
, {PASSWORD}
, {HOSTNAME}
and {MYIP}
. Restart the background service and foreground application to apply any changes.

I am just letting you know that I'm again getting that error on installation with this new release (something about "installer not being able to find an existing file"), where the path displayed in the window that pops up is "C:\Program Files\Marcs Updater\unins000.exe", and with Retry and Cancel options in the popup window. After clicking Cancel the installer "rolls back" the changes and exits.

Thanks for the information. Does the file actually exist and from which version (Build, 32/64 Bit, OS) are you trying to update?

Yes, the file does exists (its File version is: 51.1052.0.0), while version of the program itself is: 1.5.0.243. I am using a 32-bit version of Windows XP Pro (SP3).

And from(!) which version are you trying to update? It might be a problem with the installation itself and the only solution could be to completely reinstall the updater.

Thanks for reply. As I said, the "Marcs Updater.exe" File Properties says: 1.5.0.243, however, in the program's About Tab it says the following: "Build 243 2011-04-06 PB 451 x86" (I am curious what does that x86 mean in the end? because AFAIK I am not running 64-bit version of Windows XP)

Ahh sorry, I only now see... Apparently the program was successfully updated after all (because its version is: 1.5.0.243, which is as I see now the latest version).

OK, one more (final) note. Afterward I discovered that although the GUI process runs in the tray, the service does not. I tried manually starting it to no avail. Then I manually launched the installer (i.e. "update646939341.tmp.exe" file downloaded/created in TEMP directory) and everything went smoothly, meaning that there were no errors and the service was also installed and is now running.

Hi Marc,
Yeah, I know to restrict completely to use limited account, but this is just for kids, as in, its not about me hiding updates and filters because they will then research and mess with reg settings etc, its just that if there is buttons in front of them they will click it, regardless of what its for, I've set it enough for no admin stuff to appear, and your updater is important to hide, so they don't accidentally turn off the filter.
Anyway, just to let you know, I opened the gui, and it notified of an update for 243, I clicked the info icon, and then a certificate warning came up, anyway, I clicked allow, then update, it said "fetching data" or similar, but the downloading bar would not progress at all, so I closed it.
I have manually updated it, while 239 was still running, and it seemed to update fine.
Thanks for the options to hide icons, but maybe also have systray option also, I forgot to disable it, thought maybe that setting would also carry through as with other settings :p
Also, about the updating when systray is disabled, not sure whether you confirmed, does it update silently, or must one run the gui every so often to update? thanks.
